The Oakland-based Ella Baker Center has an interesting program I'm just learning about called "Soul of The City". The website explains the initiative as folows:
* Political Education for a New Era
Our transformational workshop teaches interconnectedness and introduces participants to the campaign's goals and vision. The Reclaim the Future Workshop uses interactive group sessions, cutting-edge analysis, and multimedia to help participants understand the magnitude of the challenges we face, envision a different way of being together, and connect with a shared purpose to transform our city into a place of health and hope.
* Community Service for Community Solutions
Solving the challenges before us starts in our own neighborhoods. Soul of the City's Serve Our City community service projects are member-led demonstration projects that aim to bring residents together to share resources, build mutual prosperity, and improve the environment. Serve Our City projects emphasize interconnectedness, healing, and hope.
* New Leadership for a New Day
Soul of the City turns community service into community leadership by engaging people in the political process. We are building a political force that can create lasting change, and developing leaders who can effectively move policy and programs that lift up all communities. Soul of the City aims to create an invested voter base that transforms the capacity of all neighborhoods to achieve sustainability and prosperity.
