Oakland Mayor's Race: Rebecca Kaplan On Joe Tuman And Voting

Sierra Club thinks Joe Tuman isn't "viable" Oakland At-Large Councilmember and Oakland Mayor's Race candidate called this blogger regarding the blog post entitled " Oakland Mayor's Race: Rebecca Kaplan Fears Joe Tuman ," where it was reported that Kaplan recommended that Joe Tuman not be the second choice for those voting for her. That information came from the Bay Area Wellstone Democratic Renewal Club's email forum, where long time Oakland local business supporter, political activist, and friend Pamela Drake wrote this: Rebecca Kaplan contacted me and said that she is NOT recommending Tuman and that she refers voters to the East Bay Express article to make their own decisions. I apologize for repeating an incorrect report, Pamela So Rebecca's phone call was puzzling, but as they say on the street, it is what it is. What Kaplan said to this blogger is that she encourages voters to make the selection they think is best. Also, Kaplan note

Oakland Mayor's Race: Rebecca Kaplan announces run for Mayor

Today, Wednesday, Oakland At-Large Councilmember Rebecca Kaplan made official what many of her supporters were waiting for: that she's officially running for Mayor. She did this 49 minutes ago at the Joyce Gordon Gallery at 406 14th St. It was just two years ago in September 2008 that now-Councilmember Kaplan talked with this blogger about running for the At-Large Oakland City Council Seat: Now, less than two years later, and having successfully been elected as At-Large Oakland Councilmember,  Rebecca Kaplan announces she's running for Mayor of Oakland. What was true then in 2008 is true now, Oakland's in terrible fiscal shape and its worse today. But let's go a step further: Oakland's got a giant unemployment and underemployment problem that could sack many of the new restaurants that have opened over the past two years. Is Kaplan the person to fix all of this? Well, she just got into Oakland City Hall. Mayor Dellums?  What's up? While I don&#

Rebecca Kaplan: why she's running for Mayor of Oakland - Susan Mernit

Susan Mernit, Oakland Local Founder and Executive Editor, was kind enough to post her interview with Oakland's At-Large Councilmember Rebecca Kaplan at Zennie62.com and at SFGate.com, and here at Oakland Focus. The Rebecca Kaplan interview's a to-the-point discussion of her reasons behind her decision to run. (A bit of disclosure: Rebecca Kaplan's communications director is a blogger and editor at Oakland Local.) Before the text is presented, this blogger has to make one observation: Councilmember Kaplan said she's thought "for months" about running for Mayor. Given that she's barely two years into her time as Councilmember, it seems safe to say Kaplan was not happy being Oakland's At Large elected official and wanted to be Mayor of Oakland as far back as after the first year of her term. But that's this blogger's observation: I yield the floor to Susan Mernit: When Rebecca Kaplan announced last week she had formed a committee to ex

Oakland Mayor's Race: Ron Dellums running; Rebecca Kaplan should not run

Oakand Mayor Ron Dellums  In the 2010 Oakland Mayor's Race, this news: Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums is running for reelection . This blogger learned the news from a good friend who's been involved in Oakland political and nonprofit circles for over 3 decades. In the "funny who you see on the same plane flight" book, this person was on the same San Francisco to Chicago flight late Tuesday night. That's when the information that's been largely hidden from the public was shared. "Dellums is going to give it a go and see what happens" the person said. Also Mayor Dellums had a fund-raiser over the weekend. The foundation for Ron Dellums' campaign for reelection as Mayor of Oakland has started. While, as of this writing, I still don't think Dellums can win, the Mayor does have three things going for him. First, he's the incumbent and he's theoretically able to defend his record better than anyone else. Second, and perhaps th

Oakland Mayor's Race: Rebecca Kaplan interview first take

Last week, Friday morning, Oakland Councilmember (At-Large) and Oakland Mayor's Race candidate Rebecca Kaplan met this video-blogger at an appropriately Oakland location, The Merritt Cafe and Bakery. There, we were warmly greeted by Merritt Bakery Owner Charles Griffith, and sat down to a brunch of excellent chicken and waffles for Kaplan, and eggs, corned beef and hash for this video-blogger. Image by spotreporting via Flickr Rebecca Kaplan at The Oscar Grant Protest This is not the full blog about the interview, but an introduction. Kaplan and I talked about the issue of earlier this year and got that out of the way off camera. On camera, we talked about the impact of the Federal Court decision to declare Proposition 8 (or Prop 8) unconstitutional, Kaplan's take on Oakland's police cost problem, how the Oakland Mayor's Race was going for her, and how she would handle a range of issues if she was elected Mayor of Oakland. Thus far, Oakland Mayor

Rebecca Kaplan Saved The Oakland As For Oakland She Says

Rebecca Kaplan Saved The Oakland As For Oakland She Says At the Thursday, August 28th, Alameda Democratic Party Forum featuring 8 of the 15 Oakland Mayor's Race candidates and ran by Oakland's former Mayor Elihu Harris, Oakland Councilmember Rebecca Kaplan (At-Large) stood up and made the claim that she saved the Oakland A's for Oakland. What she was referring to was the details that led to the new 10-year lease between the Oakland Athletics Baseball Team, and the Oakland-Alameda County Joint Powers Authority, on which she sits. Kaplan has said to this blogger before that, right when the Mayor of Oakland objected to the original lease deal, she called Oakland A's Owner Lew Wolff to inform him that it would all be worked out, and to work out some of the kinks in the negotiating process. At the forum, Councilmember Kaplan doubled down on her statement, and got eyebrows to raise among the panelists, and extra air taken in by the attendees. Afterwards, I asked Kaplan about

Re-elect Rebecca Kaplan Over Sidebotham, Johnson For Oakland City Council At-Large In 2020

Re-elect Rebecca Kaplan Over Sidebotham, Johnson For Oakland City Council At-Large In 2020 - Video Re-elect Rebecca Kaplan Over Nancy Sidebotham, Derreck Johnson For Oakland City Council At-Large In 2020 In the 2020 Oakland Elections, Oakland City Councilmember Rebecca Kaplan is facing a major challenge from friend and perennial campaigner Nancy Sidebotham, and newcomer Derreck Johnson. Nancy is an incredible member of the Oakland political world, but her main advantage is in pointing out problems, less than offering solutions. I like Derreck Johnson, and his run represents a need for more black male participation in Oakland politics. That said, he has no previous Oakland political experience at all, and no knowledge of municipal governance. As much as his efforts and his errors in business are good teachers for him, and for anyone entering politics, he's not ready to lead Oakland at this point in time, Moreover, he's the latest manchurian candidate offered up by my godsist

Oakland Mayor's Race: Kaplan calls Sierra Club, Oakland Chamber bullies LWV

As this blogger has written, The (yeah, capital "T") Oakland Mayor's Race is going to get even more interesting and today, Thursday, is proof. Pay attention to this blog post if you enjoy laughter and guffaws, and you know you do. First, Councilmember Rebecca Kaplan phoned to say she called Kent Lewandowski, volunteer Chairperson for the Northern Alameda County Group of the Sierra Club, San Francisco Bay Chapter, and the author of what's still the most awful email in Oakland Politics ever seen by this blogger, to ask him to include all of the candidates. I must admit, this is funny If you're just getting wind of this fart the Sierra Club broke, Kent Lewandowski sent an email to almost every candidate in the Oakland Mayor's Race (except Arnie Fields), to inform them and by "cc" this blogger that because they were not "viable" candidates, they would not be part of the Wednesday, August 25th "Oakland Green Mayoral Forum."

Maria Ayerdi-Kaplan Will Cause Development Dollars To Flow From Oakland

Maria Ayerdi Will Cause Development Dollars To Flow From Oakland When the currently proposed new Transbay Terminal comes to reality, you can thank the direction of one person for its completion and subsequent drawing or more development dollars away from Oakland: Maria Ayerdi-Kaplan. Who? Kaplan is the Executive Director of The Transbay Joint Powers Authority (TJPA) , the organization responsible for the development and financing of this massive project, which was featured in this video I created last year: The authority's work will result in the tallest building ever constructed in San Francisco, over 1,000 feet tall and a retail and mixed use complex of over 2 million square feet of space. Maria Ayerdi-Kaplan's resume is perfect for the role. She was Maria Ayerdi-Kaplan is the Executive Director of the Transbay Joint Powers Authority (TJPA) and a former TJPA Board Member. Oakland Mayor's Race: Rebecca Kaplan Fears Joe Tuman

The Oakland Mayor's Race is heating up, and with Joe Tuman in the spotlight, yet again. All of this because Tuman has become a serious threat to Mayoral Candidates Don Perata, and Councilmembers Rebecca Kaplan and Jean Quan, the elected officials considered front runners in the Oakland Mayor's Race. Yesterday in this space it was reported that Tuman so frustrated San Francisco Chronicle Reporter Matthai Kuruvali that he placed his head in his hands and on the table in a photo that, until closer inspection, looked like Kuruvali was banging his head. While the full report on the "heated discussion" is coming soon, knowing Tuman and the overall landscape, as well as what information's come in, the tone of the conversation between Tuman and Kuruvali was undoubtedly shaped by Kuruvali's desire to prove that when it comes to Oakland politics and policy, he thinks Tuman's a novice. Knowing Joe, he never relented to Kuruvali's dogged attempt to trip hi

Oakland News: Oakland Mayor's Race - thoughts on the forum before video

On Thursday night July 15th, a change in flight plans enabled this blogger to attend the Oakland Mayoral Forum on Public Safety. Here are some thoughts from the distance of Georgia before the forum videos go up. First, former California State Senator Don Perata's making a huge mistake by not showing up to the debates. As I've explained to Perata, and the other Oakland mayoral candidates when I've talked to them, its very important to have as much internet exposure as possible that's self-generated. Instead, Perata's allowing others - once again - to write his script for him. Come November, it's going to cost him dearly. As a joke, someone - perhaps longtime Oaklander Pam Drake, since she took that photo - placed a chair next to the candidates panel with the words "Don Perata" on it. While they also should have had one for Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums, because Dellums is just that he's making his own media just by working at being Mayor, ev

Rebecca Kaplan, Jean Quan, Joe Tuman Lead New Oakland Mayors Race Poll

Rebecca Kaplan, Jean Quan, Joe Tuman Lead New Oakland Mayors Race Poll Rebecca Kaplan, Oakland's At-Large Councilmember, is the leader in the latest Jobs and Housing Coalition Poll to be released this week. The tally, without the percentages as of now, is Rebecca Kaplan, Jean Quan, Joe Tuman, Libby Schaaf, Dan Siegel, and Bryan Parker. The poll of 1,200 people in Oakland says nothing about how voters will make their ranked choice picks. So, about all it tells us is that Kaplan will get the most of the first place votes, just ahead of Quan. But who will get second or third place is another story, not addressed by the poll, as of this writing. Stay tuned. A video-blog post for Oakland Focus IFTTT

Rebecca Kaplan Oakland Councilmember On Continued Need To Wear Quality Masks to Stop COVID

Rebecca Kaplan Oakland Councilmember On Continued Need To Wear Quality Masks to Stop COVID Vice Mayor Rebecca Kaplan released a statement urging community members to continue wearing masks indoors and around those not in your immediate household. In recent days, there have been changes to the guidance issued by some officials and agencies, regarding the use of masks to help protect public health from the dangers of further spread of COVID. However, Kaplan along with several public officials and experts caution that the new, looser mask guidance, is NOT based on COVID case rates dropping to the previously recommended and announced levels. Instead, some officials and agencies have simply changed their criteria, in order to remove masking, although the data of transmission levels does not support this change. Kaplan states: “As someone who is elected to represent the public, and who has been working on COVID issues since the beginning of the pandemic, including launching the nation
