Chabot Space & Science Center Executive Director Alexandra Barnett Resigns - What About That DEFICIT!?!

This Montcarion Article leaves out a huge piece of information: that Chabot faced a $1 million budget shortfall as recently as July, and with no obvious money source to close it. She tells the reporter she's leaving for "the man of her dreams," but lets face it, if she knew she was going to continue to get paid and the Chabot board wanted her to stay, she'd stick around. After all, she says she's moving to Los Gatos -- that is the Bay Area.

Chabot director to resign

At year's end, Barnett will pursue personal interests and clear the way for new leadership

Chabot Space & Science Center Executive Director Alexandra Barnett announced her resignation Wednesday to pursue personal interests and clear the way for new leadership as the center embarks on its goal of becoming a premier educational institution.

Barnett said she will leave at the end of the year but will remain involved with the center's new $4 million digital planetarium, a project she brought in during her four-year tenure.

The decision to leave her post was not an easy one for Barnett.

"My No. 1 priority is where this institution needs to be," she said.

Barnett had planned on leaving the center in the latter half of 2007, but knew she could no longer give a long-term commitment as the center positions itself with a goal of becoming one of the Bay Area's top destinations.

"I loved it here," she said.

But something else tugged at her heart.

"I met the man of my dreams," she said.

The couple is not yet engaged, but will live in Los Gatos.

Barnett plans to return to consulting and write her fourth book, possibly on the Russian space program.

The center will seek a recruiter to conduct a national search for Barnett's replacement, said board chairman and former City Council member Dick Spees.

"Alex has done an outstanding job of streamlining operations and revitalizing the space exhibits and the planetarium to keep Chabot on the cutting edge of science education," Spees said.

An interim executive director will be named to oversee the center's annual $6 million budget. The center hopes to complete its search by June 2007.

Barnett was recruited from England, where she had been a key player in the conception and delivery of the National Space Center in Leicester.

She said she will remain a lifelong member of Chabot, whose dual mission included endearing youths to science in the classroom and enticing the public with the latest scientific advances and discoveries. She said the center plans to become the leader in environmental sciences education.

She said it's the emotional connection to science that a student or visitor experiences that engages him or her with science.

Barnett said, for example, when people see Earth from space -- even if it's only a projected image while in the planetarium -- they begin to realize how small they are in the universe. She said visitors become more committed to learning about it.

"It's a broadening perspective," she said. "Space is not just about looking out, it's also about looking back."

Hi

Thanks for considering that people like me actually end up finding comments like this....

Actually, we ended this fiscal year just fine. We closed the gap - which was already considerably less than a million before July. Never believe the Tribune. We're still operating and there's no reason to assume that we're not going to be here for another 123yrs.

Why should there be any other reason other than the one stated for me to go? I did indeed meet a wonderful guy. Would you want to commute from south of Los Gatos to Oakland every day? Thats nearly two hours in rush hour traffic each way. Not for me.

And as for the board wanting me to go, nothing could be further from the truth which is why we're figuring out how I can still be involved, but just not do the day to day.

Don't begrudge others a little happiness. Thats mean spirited.

It's plainly just the timing that's all. The PR on Chabot has centered around the deficit, so it's only logical to issue a question as I did.

No one's saying you can't be happy.

Again, it's all just the timing of events.

Also, where the deficit was front page news at the Oakland Tribune, the resolution of the problem was not equally reported.

I have known Alex for four years, since she started at Chabot. She has done the remarkable and often heartbreaking job of streamlining staff and programs to make the best use of resources. She has lived the health of Chabot for four incredible years and should be applauded not criticized for her hurculean efforts on behalf of the institution. She has decided to broaded her life to include a family outside of Chabot. I say congratulations and best of luck. You have done a outstanding job, Alex and you leave the Science Center much healthier for your sacrifice.

Chabot is a magnificent world class treasure in the Oakland hills, which unfortunately does not receive the support it should from either the city or the citizenry. To have a unique asset like Chabot and not embrace it as an Oakland showplace is a shame.

Let's all stand up and support Oakland's fabulous attractions; Chabot Space and Science Center, Fairyland, the Oakland Zoo, The Presidential Yacht Potomac, Dunsmuir Estate, Camron Stanford House, the Aquatic Center, Preservation Park, and many others, all unique and wonderful.

yep, the Tribune is not particularly balanced or fair. They seem happy to hack into Chabot whenever there is a problem, but not willing to embrace its successes and triumphs. And each time they publish a bad story, usually with incorrect facts (like the 1.2million debt that we didn't have) they hurt our ability to keep serving the schools and the community.
You can gauge their accuracy by the fact that they decided that I was moving to the East Coast. Instead of calling me to ask, they simply made it up or trusted an unreliable source.
Thanks for publishing!

In light of one comment sent that crossed the line, and so was rejected by me, I'm going to write this.

Chabot is a great institution. Like every group or organization at a public level of visibilty, it's going to be the subject of opinion.

This blog is just 1/100th of what I do with SBS; this is an opinion section, and not investigative journalism.

If the executive director and board are so concerned with how they're perceived in the media, then rather than complain about it, there's one answer:

Start a blog.

Oakland Mayor's Race: LWV Forum Draws Oakland's Older Folks

Oakland Mayor's Race Forum first take. (Which means, there's going to be more of these posts on last night, because a lot was happening.) This just in: The Oakland Tribune's out of touch with Oakland. A number of attendees of the 450 estimated said they learned of the Oakland League Of Women Voters via "the newspaper." All of the people who made that statement were over 50 years old. Still, the forum, which attracted every candidate except Dr. Terrance Candell, was a success. The auditorium at 300 Lakeside Drive seats 380 people, so if you do the math, it was about 70 over capacity. The crowd was a happy mix of supporters of candidates and long-time observers of the Oakland political scene. The one complaint they had was there wasn't enough time to hear what the candidates were about. That wasn't because there were too many candidates, but due to the format. Either Oakland Tribune Editor Martin Reynolds or the League of Women Voter
