Lakeshore Business District Crimes A Matter Of Black Praying Non-Blacks

This came from the Yahoo! Message Board. It details crimes in the Lakeshore Business District. To be frank, there's a history of young Black men from outside the neighborhood praying on those who are White or non-Black and living in the neighborhood. Why this is, I do not know. I can say that in the 16 years I've lived in this area, and walked home at all hours of the night, I've never even come close to being the victim of a crime.

But I've walked with friends who are White and in one case, it seemed like a young brother on a bike basically aimed right at my friend -- until I intervened. Pretty weird.

But I have a friend who's White and Blond and walked home at midnight from her job; nothing ever happened to her. She says it's for two reasons: 1) she's not scared, and 2) she keeps her head up.

Here's the information from the group...

To be more specific about patterns of robberies in the Grand Lake area, it seems that the Lakeshore Avenue Business District is being targeted, particularly from late February until now. More notably, it's primarily the east side of Lakeshore Ave., as it makes it easy for robbery suspects to run down Wesley, Longridge, or Trestle Glen to waiting getaway cars.

* Last Thursday, during a meeting of the Lakeshore Business Improvement District (BID), I attended and brought along with me Eddie Simlin, Merchant Watch Coordinator, and his colleague Titus Taylor, both of whom are Police Services Technicians. They will be conducting CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design) security surveys for all interested businesses, starting with the recently robbed businesses. They will also provide Merchant Watch training (the business district version of Neighborhood Watch - yes, merchants will be encouraged to step up as block captains!).

I will also be working with the Lakeshore BID Executive Director, Pamela Drake, on getting other important information out to merchants, door-to-door, to help reduce funds solicitations by truant youth.

Residents around the business district, please help out your neighborhood businesses by watching out for packs of three or more young men in cars as well as walking around scoping out businesses. Below are most, not all of the commercial robberies and info for 2007. Note that 3 of the 4 robberies below occurred at night, and in all cases, the suspects were wearing hoods or puff jackets with hoods.

Walked around the corner down Lakeshore Monday at 7:30pm and was pleased to see Officer Kim standing near Arizmendi with citation book in hand. Wish I had the presence of mind to say 'glad you here'. dkucera
