On: Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums Fires CAO Deborah Edgerly

Today, it was annouced that Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums fired Chief Administrative Officer Deborah Edgerly after sending signals that he was going to first leave the process such that he could retire, then placed her on administrative leave, then on Tuesday of this week, decided to fire her. Regardless of where you look, it's hard to find a cool head in all of the Oakland City Hall mess.

At this point Edgerly has to go, and if it ends up costing the city, so be it. Though I doubt it will. Her continuing presence, and the lack of a nepotism/corruption standard, would be so demoralizing for Oakland residents that it is WORTH it to get rid of her and write appropriate legislation.

I agree. I appreciate the posted video -- grass roots journalism and blogging is so important. But I think it is a mistake to bring race into this; it muddies the waters and brings sensationalism into this. Oakland is a poorly run city. Period. When I heard the city administrator earns $250,000 yearly, I almost had a bird! Regardless of the recent brouhaha over Edgerly and her nephew...anyone earning that much money better have something to show for it! In the private sector, Edgerly would have been long gone. The shareholders/board of trustees would have simply taken a hard look at Oakland, seen an unprecedented crime wave, a demoralized police force, a dip in public confidence, continued lackluster economic investment in the city...and shown Edgerly the door. Where is her sense of public service? If her presence in her position, at this venture, will be detrimental to the well being of this city, then she should have voluntarily stepped down. Its in the interest of the people of Oakland. No one said she would not be paid pending an investigation, but she should have stepped aside to let the city get on with business.

And importantly, the people of Oakland have no say here...the City Administrator is not an elected official.

Viva De La Fuente for calling for the 24 month audit. Edgerly--even if the investigation into her recent behavior (interceding into Operation Nutcracker) exonerates her- may unwittingly have sparked just the right amount of heat to start the flame that will light the dark corners of city hall. My guess is the audit will find quite a bit of inefficiency and mismanagement. But good! This is the soul searching this city has needed for years. 24 months? Lets audit ourselves back 24 years!

Cal Women's Rowing Team member Jill Costello passed away from complications due to lung cancer on June 24th 2010 and at the age of 21. A San Francisco event and run called Jog For Jill has been established and will be held this Sunday, September 12th at 5 PM.
