Communities for a Better Environment v. Chevron Lawsuit Upsets Bay Area

Earlier this month, a group called Communities for a Better Environment filed suit against Chevron's attempt to upgrade its Richmond Refinery because they claim the Environmental Impact Report (EIR) was not well done, but judging by the comments of readers of SFGate, the SF Chronicle website, the timing of the lawsuit could not have been worse.

The problem: high gas prices.  The problem's turned what would normally be knee-jerk opponents into reasoned observers.

Take a look:

What morons! We need to give Chevron a free pass to upgrade to lower gas a little more. We need to ship these enviornuts to China now!

Don't complain about high gas prices. Guess what happens when Chevron and others can't expand production or god forbid need to totally relocate a refinery. As the saying goes, company's don't pay higher prices, consumers do.

Don't you guys get it. If we don't let them rerfine here they will have to refine somewhere else farther away. That will mean lower prices for us at the pump. They farther you travel from the bay area the CHEAPER THE PRICES ARE. Make them go away OR GIVE US CHAEPER rates at the pump.

Lower quality oil means more pollution to refine out. More gasoline means continued dependence means higher prices in the long haul, and accelerated climate change to boot. Get it? I hope "people do."

We don't need no stinkin' gas. Vote Obama for less stinkin' gas.

Regardless of planning and testing, this group will oppose a refinery even if it produces rainbows and puppies as an secondary product. Just keep thinking that the Obamessiah will solve everything.

I have to say that one does not have to be a Republican to think the Chevron plan works for Richmond!

"Reasoned observers"? THESE are the knee-jerk opponents! Apparently your definition of reason follows the logic of Rush Limbaugh and Bill O'Reilly. Pure genius.

Oakland Mayor's Race: LWV Forum Draws Oakland's Older Folks

Oakland Mayor's Race Forum first take. (Which means, there's going to be more of these posts on last night, because a lot was happening.) This just in: The Oakland Tribune's out of touch with Oakland. A number of attendees of the 450 estimated said they learned of the Oakland League Of Women Voters via "the newspaper." All of the people who made that statement were over 50 years old. Still, the forum, which attracted every candidate except Dr. Terrance Candell, was a success. The auditorium at 300 Lakeside Drive seats 380 people, so if you do the math, it was about 70 over capacity. The crowd was a happy mix of supporters of candidates and long-time observers of the Oakland political scene. The one complaint they had was there wasn't enough time to hear what the candidates were about. That wasn't because there were too many candidates, but due to the format. Either Oakland Tribune Editor Martin Reynolds or the League of Women Voter
