Reward doubled in Oakland beating of woman, 80

OAKLAND — Mayor Ron Dellums and the Oakland Police Department on Monday increased to $10,000 the reward the city will offer for information leading to the arrest of three people suspected of attacking an 80-year-old woman.

The woman, whom police have not identified, was beaten unconscious Thursday by three men in the 2700 block of Grande Vista Avenue. The men stood over her laughing after the attack, police said.

The woman was fighting for her life Friday but was upgraded to critical but stable condition during the weekend. She suffered swelling of the brain, bleeding from the brain and an orbital fracture near one of her eyes.

"I offer my heartfelt condolences to this woman and her family," Dellums said in a statement. "This was a senseless act of violence that is both tragic and intolerable. It's an example of the sort of rage and disregard for human life that cannot and will not be tolerated in this city."

Investigators canvassed the area Monday night, looking for witnesses or other clues. Dellums said he "strongly (encourages) anyone who may have information regarding this matter to come forward."

The mayor acknowledged that Oakland often sees an increase in robberies and violent crime during the holiday season. He said the city is "committed to deploying officers, resources and time to ensure that our communities are safe and that everyone can fully participate in a peaceful season."

Authorities previously were offering a $5,000 reward for information about the attack.

Anyone with information can call police at 510-238-3426 or Crime Stoppers of Oakland at 510-777-8572 or 510-777-3211.

Oakland Mayor's Race: LWV Forum Draws Oakland's Older Folks

Oakland Mayor's Race Forum first take. (Which means, there's going to be more of these posts on last night, because a lot was happening.) This just in: The Oakland Tribune's out of touch with Oakland. A number of attendees of the 450 estimated said they learned of the Oakland League Of Women Voters via "the newspaper." All of the people who made that statement were over 50 years old. Still, the forum, which attracted every candidate except Dr. Terrance Candell, was a success. The auditorium at 300 Lakeside Drive seats 380 people, so if you do the math, it was about 70 over capacity. The crowd was a happy mix of supporters of candidates and long-time observers of the Oakland political scene. The one complaint they had was there wasn't enough time to hear what the candidates were about. That wasn't because there were too many candidates, but due to the format. Either Oakland Tribune Editor Martin Reynolds or the League of Women Voter
