Police say fight over woman in Oakland leads to shooting, crash

OAKLAND — A clash between a woman's ex-boyfriend and her new one left both men in jail and the woman in a hospital after a shooting, a car chase, a crash and a fistfight Tuesday night, police said.

The 25-year-old woman and her 30-year-old boyfriend, both Oakland residents, were riding in a white 1991 Ford Mustang down 73rd Avenue about 9:30 p.m. when they encountered the woman's ex-boyfriend, a 32-year-old San Francisco man who was driving a silver 1997 four-door Cadillac Seville, police said.

The boyfriend, who was driving the Mustang, fired a gun at the ex-boyfriend, though he didn't appear to hit anyone, police said.

The Mustang took off down the road with the uninjured Seville driver in pursuit. The Seville driver began ramming the Mustang with his car, police said. The Mustang spun out, striking a stopped SUV near a gas station in the 400 block of Hegenberger Road.

The woman was knocked unconscious in the crash and was taken to a hospital for a fractured skull and a broken rib, both caused by the crash, police said. She was heavily medicated and unable to speak this morning, police said.

The 44-year-old SUV driver, an otherwise uninvolved San Rafael man, was hospitalized for injuries.

Once all the cars had stopped, the woman's boyfriend got out of the Mustang and again began firing his gun at the Seville driver, police said, and he then ran to a nearby gas station and dumped the gun there.

Officers arrived moments later to find the two men in a fistfight on the street. Officers detained both men, whose names were not released.

The woman's boyfriend was arrested on suspicion of numerous gun charges, including being a felon in possession of a firearm. He has a previous drug conviction out of San Francisco, police said.

The ex-boyfriend was arrested on suspicion of assault with his vehicle and violating a restraining order the woman had against him.

Oakland Mayor's Race: LWV Forum Draws Oakland's Older Folks

Oakland Mayor's Race Forum first take. (Which means, there's going to be more of these posts on last night, because a lot was happening.) This just in: The Oakland Tribune's out of touch with Oakland. A number of attendees of the 450 estimated said they learned of the Oakland League Of Women Voters via "the newspaper." All of the people who made that statement were over 50 years old. Still, the forum, which attracted every candidate except Dr. Terrance Candell, was a success. The auditorium at 300 Lakeside Drive seats 380 people, so if you do the math, it was about 70 over capacity. The crowd was a happy mix of supporters of candidates and long-time observers of the Oakland political scene. The one complaint they had was there wasn't enough time to hear what the candidates were about. That wasn't because there were too many candidates, but due to the format. Either Oakland Tribune Editor Martin Reynolds or the League of Women Voter
