Alameda blog "Knife Catchers" a great read

I've got a new favorite local blog - well one of them. It's called "Knife Catchers" and covers Alameda real estate in a cool way with the blogger, "L. Opine", who's tone, while rather acerbic, is entertaining and makes the otherwise boring task of reading about housing fun.

For example, she writes:

This is the third time I've sat down to write a post about tiny 318 Pacific Avenue: I find the neighborhood so depressing it's difficult to muster the energy to research even just a few facts. But in the interest of comprehensiveness, here goes 318 Pacific Avenue, a "wonderful Victorian Farmhouse" which is neither wonderful nor Victorian (nor a farmhouse, really)...Anyone paying more than $275,000 for this property given its tiny size and pathetic location just a few blocks from the barren desolation of the old Naval Air Station is an idiot who deserves to be separated from her money.

But if the Alameda Naval Air Station is developed, then the home's value takes off! But I digress.

Hopefully she gets over the issue with commenters she had early in the year.

According to Blogging Bayport Alameda, L. Opine shut down the blog because..

…No lawsuit, just threatening idiocy from some realtors, and general tiredness about having to explain what I wrote over and over to people who were too willing to cling to their erroneous interpretation of what I wrote, or why I did what I did.

I didn’t shut down comments because of people disagreeing with me. I shut down comments because that particular post specifically said something like “this is a fact-based thread; you’re free to disagree as long as you support your assertions with hard data.” Instead people kept repeating intuitions with no supporting facts, and when called on it, they cried censorship and said I couldn’t handle disagreement. So the discussion devolved into insults about my tone and attitude, and frankly I’m not willing to tolerate people insulting my on my own blog. After I shut down the comments, the idiots tracked me down and insulted me over email.

So I just had enough and pulled the plug…

My advice to L. Opine is to ignore commenters who bother you and just blog. In this life, you can either lead, follow, or get the hell out of the way. Be a leader. Earlier this year, you got out of the way, which means you gave in to the desires of one person or two at the expense of thousands.

Stick around!

Oakland Mayor's Race: LWV Forum Draws Oakland's Older Folks

Oakland Mayor's Race Forum first take. (Which means, there's going to be more of these posts on last night, because a lot was happening.) This just in: The Oakland Tribune's out of touch with Oakland. A number of attendees of the 450 estimated said they learned of the Oakland League Of Women Voters via "the newspaper." All of the people who made that statement were over 50 years old. Still, the forum, which attracted every candidate except Dr. Terrance Candell, was a success. The auditorium at 300 Lakeside Drive seats 380 people, so if you do the math, it was about 70 over capacity. The crowd was a happy mix of supporters of candidates and long-time observers of the Oakland political scene. The one complaint they had was there wasn't enough time to hear what the candidates were about. That wasn't because there were too many candidates, but due to the format. Either Oakland Tribune Editor Martin Reynolds or the League of Women Voter
