YMCA of the East Bay to Celebrate Healthy Kids Day in Oakland

On April 26, the YMCA of the East Bay will celebrate Healthy Kids Day® with free community events for kids and families at their Oakland locations. More than 1,500 Ys across the country are taking part in the celebration, meant to kick-start physical activity and learning throughout the summer – a critical out-of-school time for kids.

This year the Downtown Oakland Y, located at 2350 Broadway, will hold their Healthy Kids Day activities from 9:00am-1:00pm.  Activities include: a family triathlon (free pre-registration required) and the Y sports center (including basketball & soccer).  A free resource fair will also be in full effect with informational tables from Lifelong (who will be performing blood pressure checks) & Oakland Children’s Hospital (who will be putting on a sugary beverage/muscle activity).  Community partners for the Downtown Oakland Y’s Healthy Kids Day include The Oakland Museum, Oakland Children’s Hospital, East Bay Regional Parks, Lifelong, YMCA Camping Services and the Oakland Library.

In addition to the activities at the Downtown Oakland Y, the M. Robinson Baker Y, located at 3265 Market Street in Oakland, will hold their Healthy Kids Day activities from 10:00am-2:00pm.  Activities include: family Olympics, face painting, gardening activities and more.  An educational fair will also take place with information tables from 100 Black MenBuilding Futures Mentoring ProgramAttitudinal Healing Connection and blood pressure screenings from Alameda County public health nurses.

As a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility, the Y holds Healthy Kids Day (a national Y initiative) to teach healthy habits and inspire a lifetime love of being healthy from head to toe. The Y aims to build on the incredible potential inside each and every kid.

“It is our goal to be able to teach the kids and their parents how to live a healthy lifestyle year-round through fun, active play and educational activities,” said Robert A. Wilkins, President & CEO of the YMCA of the East Bay.
The YMCA of the East Bay, a local expert in the pillars of healthy living, continually encourages the foundations of health by providing kids the education and outlets to engage in active play, get together and building strong relationships, enjoy the outdoors and make healthy eating choices.
