Results from countless hours of research will be shared, specifically examining the social dynamics of female elephants, and how these individual relationships shape the success of families.
Through the process of studying age, experience, and leadership, Fishlock discusses what exactly influences the survival of calves and families in the sometimes difficult life of an elephant. Dr. Fishlock joined the Amboseli research team in 2011 to study the social resilience of female elephants following a devastating drought in 2009.
The silent auction part of the evening will include scrumptious arrays of appetizers and beverages as guests mingle around dozens of items donated from local Bay Area restaurants, breweries, shops, and artists. Auction items feature gift certificates, local winery gift baskets, sports events tickets, hand-crafted art, and behind the scenes visits to California Academy of Sciences, CuriOdessey, Safari West, and Oakland Zoo. “One of the most important roles of the modern zoo is to raise money to support the conservation of animals in the wild,” said Colleen Kinzley, Director of Animal Care. “Through our Celebrating Elephants events, the Oakland Zoo has raised over $250,000 that has gone directly to protect African elephants. Join us for a fabulous evening and help us protect elephants.”
An evening of “Celebrating Elephants” begins at 6:00pm in the Zoo’s Zimmer Auditorium with a reception and silent auction, followed by a presentation at 7:00pm. 96 ELEPHANTS:
The 18th annual “Celebrating Elephants” event will be in honor of “96 Elephants,” a campaign created by Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), designed to spread awareness about African elephants. 96 elephants a day are being killed for their tusks. The campaign aims to stop the demand of ivory by educating the public about ivory's deadly toll. The true cost of ivory is dead elephants - a fact that many people simply don't know. Through the 96 Elephants campaign, the goal is to call attention to the ivory crisis and collaborate with many partners to spread the message far and wide.
