Oakland Zoo Hosts Silent Auction And Reception in Honor of Elephants May 17th

Oakland, CA – On Saturday, May 17, Oakland Zoo invites the public to attend an evening designed to celebrate elephants. Guest speaker Dr. Vicki Fishlock, Resident Scientist for the Amboseli Trust for Elephants, gives eyewitness accounts from the field describing the successes and struggles of the magnificent elephants of the Amboseli plains.

Results from countless hours of research will be shared, specifically examining the social dynamics of female elephants, and how these individual relationships shape the success of families.

Through the process of studying age, experience, and leadership, Fishlock discusses what exactly influences the survival of calves and families in the sometimes difficult life of an elephant. Dr. Fishlock joined the Amboseli research team in 2011 to study the social resilience of female elephants following a devastating drought in 2009.

The silent auction part of the evening will include scrumptious arrays of appetizers and beverages as guests mingle around dozens of items donated from local Bay Area restaurants, breweries, shops, and artists. Auction items feature gift certificates, local winery gift baskets, sports events tickets, hand-crafted art, and behind the scenes visits to California Academy of Sciences, CuriOdessey, Safari West, and Oakland Zoo. “One of the most important roles of the modern zoo is to raise money to support the conservation of animals in the wild,” said Colleen Kinzley, Director of Animal Care. “Through our Celebrating Elephants events, the Oakland Zoo has raised over $250,000 that has gone directly to protect African elephants. Join us for a fabulous evening and help us protect elephants.”

An evening of “Celebrating Elephants” begins at 6:00pm in the Zoo’s Zimmer Auditorium with a reception and silent auction, followed by a presentation at 7:00pm. The cost for this event is $40 per person. All proceeds raised will support Amboseli Trust for Elephants (www.elephanttrust.org). Tickets are purchased at the door. For more information, please call 510-632-9525.

96 ELEPHANTS:

The 18th annual “Celebrating Elephants” event will be in honor of “96 Elephants,” a campaign created by Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), designed to spread awareness about African elephants. 96 elephants a day are being killed for their tusks. The campaign aims to stop the demand of ivory by educating the public about ivory's deadly toll. The true cost of ivory is dead elephants - a fact that many people simply don't know. Through the 96 Elephants campaign, the goal is to call attention to the ivory crisis and collaborate with many partners to spread the message far and wide. Working together, “96 Elephants” and WCS plan to reduce consumer demand for ivory by 25% by 2016. http://www.oaklandzoo.org/96_Elephants.php

Oakland Mayor's Race: LWV Forum Draws Oakland's Older Folks

Oakland Mayor's Race Forum first take. (Which means, there's going to be more of these posts on last night, because a lot was happening.) This just in: The Oakland Tribune's out of touch with Oakland. A number of attendees of the 450 estimated said they learned of the Oakland League Of Women Voters via "the newspaper." All of the people who made that statement were over 50 years old. Still, the forum, which attracted every candidate except Dr. Terrance Candell, was a success. The auditorium at 300 Lakeside Drive seats 380 people, so if you do the math, it was about 70 over capacity. The crowd was a happy mix of supporters of candidates and long-time observers of the Oakland political scene. The one complaint they had was there wasn't enough time to hear what the candidates were about. That wasn't because there were too many candidates, but due to the format. Either Oakland Tribune Editor Martin Reynolds or the League of Women Voter
