Grand Lake Theater Marquee Oakland Condemns New Zealand Shooting Alan Michaan, owner of Oakland’s Grand Lake Theater took a stand against racism via his movie theater’s marquee. The new message reads “We condemn New Zealand Racism” and referring to the horrible double mass shootings at two mosques in that country, and done by a white supremacist. For those not familiar with the Grand Lake Theater or Alan Michaan, the movie palace has been around since the 20s; Alan’s use of the marquee for more than just movie titles started in 2004, when he announced he would not enforce the R-rating given Fahrenheit 911, Michael Moore’s documentary movie.
