Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao To Hire Robert Bobb As Chief Administrative Officer
Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao hiring Robert Bobb for CAO! Site a desire to have an experienced, steady hand to run the City of Oakland, Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao threw out what she called a “Hail Mary” and told a source she decided to hire former Oakland City Administrator Robert Bobb to be her new CAO. There's no secret that Mayor Thao admires Robert Bobb, and has thought about him essentially reprising the role he held from 1997 and until he was fired (in a move seen by many as completely unwarnted) by then-Oakland Mayor Jerry Brown, in 2002. And why? Simply because Robert Bobb, called “Mr Bobb?” by his former employees and fans, was working to build a Downtown Ballpark Stadium for the Oakland Athletics, and at a 15-acre spot of land at the corner of 22nd and Telegraph Avenue in what is now called “Uptown Oakland”. Since then, Robert Bobb has built on what was already a stellar and decorated career in city management before he came to Oakland. He was almost immediately hired to be the CAO of Washington DC, after Oakland. And during that time, Mr. Bobb did for Washington what Jerry Brown did not let him do for Oakland: build a downtown ballpark and brought the Montreal Expos to DC from Canada, where they became the Washingon Nationals of Major League Baseball. Mr. Bobb was most notably appointed by Michigan governor Jennifer Granholm as the Emergency Financial Manager for the Detroit Public Schools and served in that role until 2011. He was recently appointed to and served on the Reopen DC Committee in Washington, DC. Robert Bobb has become a highly-sought-after government consultant, and he and his staff have helped scores of governments in various roles around the country. Now, he takes on his biggest challenge, should he accept the job: bringing Oakland back to greatness. I admit a personal prejudice here because Robert Bobb was the one who put me in the position to wind up doing what many considered impossible: getting Oakland to the point of just eight NFL votes off being the host of the 2005 Super Bowl. Robert Bobb and Bill Claggett got together and planned to put $80,000 into the Oakland-Alameda County Sports Commission – a non-profit organization I created from scratch, and established a 45-member board. But Mayor Brown put the kabosh on that, and becasuse I accused him of being racist in an email to my board. Brown's action was against the law in California. Stay tuned, and this Robert Bobb news is a kinda LIRPA SLOOF, but one not far from the truth.

Oakland Mayor's Race: LWV Forum Draws Oakland's Older Folks

Oakland Mayor's Race Forum first take. (Which means, there's going to be more of these posts on last night, because a lot was happening.) This just in: The Oakland Tribune's out of touch with Oakland. A number of attendees of the 450 estimated said they learned of the Oakland League Of Women Voters via "the newspaper." All of the people who made that statement were over 50 years old. Still, the forum, which attracted every candidate except Dr. Terrance Candell, was a success. The auditorium at 300 Lakeside Drive seats 380 people, so if you do the math, it was about 70 over capacity. The crowd was a happy mix of supporters of candidates and long-time observers of the Oakland political scene. The one complaint they had was there wasn't enough time to hear what the candidates were about. That wasn't because there were too many candidates, but due to the format. Either Oakland Tribune Editor Martin Reynolds or the League of Women Voter
