Anti-Oakland A's Las Vegas Ballpark Petition Drive Starts But Will It Stop $120 Million Bond Issue?
Anti-Oakland A's Las Vegas Ballpark Petition Drive Starts But Will It Work To Stop $120 Million Bond Issue? Schools Not Stadiums, the effort to put the $120 million bond issue for the Oakland A's Las Vegas Stadium on the state-wide ballot for the November 2024 Election spent the $1 million to file a referendum petition to repeal the state funding for stadium bonds that was approved in this year’s special legislative session.. But now, it' a race against time. The minders of the effort have until June 26th 2024. “Schools Over Stadiums has been committed to pursuing every possible path to stop the use of public funds to subsidize a billionaire’s stadium and that has always included putting the question to Nevada voters who were effectively shut out of the process,” said Dawn Etcheverry, a music teacher and President of NSEA and Schools Over Stadiums. Steve Hill, CEO of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority has called the efforts “misguided” and “hard to get that on the ballot,” noting the benefits of thousands of jobs and tourism that will come from the future stadium. “The referendum petition targets specific parts of Senate Bill 1 to strip public funding for the proposed stadium regardless of what State and County officials agree do in any sort of development deal,” said Alexander Marks, spokesperson for Schools Over Stadiums. “We’re excited to get out there and start gathering signatures from Nevadans who want to put our schools first. We’re confident that a majority of Nevadans will join us in taking action to put Nevada’s priorities back in line so we can address an education system that ranks 48th in funding with the largest class sizes and highest vacancies in the country.” Will The Signature Drive And Petition Filing Beat The Bond Issue To Life? While the Schools Over Stadiums minders talk of landing 104,000 needed signatures by June 26th 2024, they seem to forget one thing: the bond itself may be let by that time. In my June 22, 2023 interview with Guy Hobbs of Hobbs & Ong Associates, the financial developers of the $380 million ballpark funding effort, he remarked that they have between 12 and 18 months to finish the work to get the bond issue out for sale. So, that translates to Saturday June 22, 2024 if it takes 12 months - just four days ahead of the signature deadline. If that date is met, it would stop the Schools Over Stadiums effort before it got started into its second phase of getting on the ballot for the November election. On the other hand, if it takes 18 months, that's Sunday, December 22, 2024 and Schools Over Stadiums will have made its deadline by then for a vote to happen on Election Day November 2024. So, the race is on. Stay tuned for updates, but participate in our livestream.

Oakland Mayor's Race: LWV Forum Draws Oakland's Older Folks

Oakland Mayor's Race Forum first take. (Which means, there's going to be more of these posts on last night, because a lot was happening.) This just in: The Oakland Tribune's out of touch with Oakland. A number of attendees of the 450 estimated said they learned of the Oakland League Of Women Voters via "the newspaper." All of the people who made that statement were over 50 years old. Still, the forum, which attracted every candidate except Dr. Terrance Candell, was a success. The auditorium at 300 Lakeside Drive seats 380 people, so if you do the math, it was about 70 over capacity. The crowd was a happy mix of supporters of candidates and long-time observers of the Oakland political scene. The one complaint they had was there wasn't enough time to hear what the candidates were about. That wasn't because there were too many candidates, but due to the format. Either Oakland Tribune Editor Martin Reynolds or the League of Women Voter
