Over the weekend, Oakland At-Large City Councilmember Rowena Brown was the victim of a violent assault and robbery. Here are the confirmed details regarding the incident as we know them right now: The Attack: The incident occurred just before 12:45 a.m. on Sunday, July 19th, at Councilmember Brown's apartment in West Oakland. The Suspect: The alleged assailant was an acquaintance identified as 38-year-old Ahshatae Millhouse. Councilmember Brown's office released a statement noting that the suspect was someone she had been supporting through a difficult time. The Altercation: According to a probable cause affidavit from the Oakland Police Department, Millhouse punched the councilmember, dragged her by the hair, and used a knee to press down on her neck. Councilmember Brown managed to escape, and the suspect reportedly fled the scene with her purse and two cell phones. Arrest & Charges: OPD Ceasefire officers acted quickly and apprehended Millhouse outside of the city on Tuesday, July 21st. The Alameda County District Attorney has officially charged the suspect, Ahshatae Millhouse with three felonies: first-degree residential robbery, assault with force likely to produce great bodily injury, and false imprisonment by violence. She was arrested Monday in Livermore and is being held at the Santa Rita jail. Councilmember Brown sought medical treatment immediately following the attack and is currently recovering with the support of her loved ones. Her office stated that she remains focused on her recovery and on continuing her work for the Oakland community. Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee issued a supportive statement on Thursday, confirming she has been in touch with Brown. She noted that the Councilmember is doing well and asked that the community respect her privacy during this healing process.
